Sometimes, it is not easy to describe the correct way to floss to a person wearing braces. Therefore, don’t be shy about asking us to show you the proper way to floss your teeth at your orthodontic appointment. It is easier to demonstrate flossing person-to-person.
Flossing Teeth with Braces
It is helpful to have first-hand knowledge on how to floss when you wear braces, as knowing the correct way to floss will keep your smile healthy while we straighten your teeth. Flossing is slightly different with braces, as we also recommend that you also clean under the wires and around the brackets with an interproximal brush. Also, remember that it will take more time to floss when you wear braces. Using traditional floss can be tricky. So, you need to take about 15 minutes when performing the activity. We suggest that you only use waxed floss, as using unwaxed floss can cause the thread to tear or get stuck in the brackets.
What Steps Do I Follow to Floss?
When you floss your teeth with braces, cut about a 24-inch piece of floss and thread the string between your teeth and the main wire of the braces. Stand in front of a mirror, so you can manage the floss. Wrap the ends of the thread around the index fingers to make flossing easier. Softly press a one-inch piece of floss between your teeth, sliding the floss gently up and down on the sides of the teeth, always moving toward the gum line first. When removing the floss, unthread it gently from the wire. Now that you have a basic idea of what to do, you can ask us anything about flossing of which you are not sure. Because caring for your teeth with braces is different than brushing and flossing the teeth without braces, you need to make sure you are flossing correctly.
